Out on a Limb officially launches on May 20th at McNally Robinson Booksellers

Great Plains Press is proud to welcome Erna Buffie as the third author in The City Project series with her book, Out On a Limb. In this installment, Erna explores the power of trees, not only focusing on the environmental benefits, but also the impact that trees have on health and safety within cities. As a filmmaker and writer with extensive knowledge of the urban canopy, Erna encourages readers and community members with ways to save and sustain city trees.

Erna Buffie is an experienced writer, environmental activist, and documentary filmmaker. For more than twenty years, she has worked on CBC’s The Nature of Things. Her award-winning films include Smarty Plants: The Secret World of Plant Behaviour and The Changing Sea. Erna was also the past chair of Trees Please Winnipeg Coalition, and she now writes regular opinion editorials for the Winnipeg Free Press on politics and the environment.

“Out on a Limb is an inspiring journey to meet some of Erna Buffie’s favourite trees in an unlikely place – Winnipeg’s urban forests. Along the way, we discover not only what urban trees need to survive, but just how much we need them to thrive in our cities. This book is a celebration of a tree lover and her journey to save them.”— Caroline Underwood, Executive producer and a wildlife & science filmmaker for The Nature of Things

Join Erna Buffie and host, Ariel Gordon, for the Launch of Out on a Limb at McNally Robinson Booksellers’ Grant Park location on May 20th, 2026 at 7:00 pm.

This event is free to attend and will be livestreamed via McNally’s YouTube Channel.
